Overview - Mannar Island Lighthouse

Perched on the northernmost tip of Mannar Island, the Mannar Island Lighthouse (also known as the Talaimannar Lighthouse) is a beacon of history and resilience. Constructed by the British in 1915, this 19-meter white tower stands adjacent to the Talaimannar Pier, which was once the bustling terminus for the Indo-Lanka ferry service connecting Sri Lanka to India. Although the ferry service ceased after the 1964 cyclone, the lighthouse remains a striking landmark against the backdrop of the azure Indian Ocean.

Visitors are drawn here not just for the architectural heritage, but for the unique geographical significance—it is the closest point in Sri Lanka to India, with the legendary Adam's Bridge (Rama Setu) sandbanks visible nearby. The area offers a tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a sunset stroll along the pier or observing the local kite surfers who flock to these windy shores. While climbing the tower is currently restricted, the site provides excellent photo opportunities and a poignant connection to the island's colonial and maritime past.

A beautiful and serene place at the edge of the country. The lighthouse is well maintained externally. The sunset view from the pier is absolutely stunning. Worth the long drive!

Interesting piece of history. You can see the old railway tracks ending right at the pier. You can't climb the lighthouse, but walking around the area gives you a sense of the past.

Very windy and hot, but the view is unique. It's the closest point to India. Great spot for photography, especially with the fishing boats in the background.
