Overview - Pidurangala Rock
Pidurangala Rock is a massive geological formation located directly adjacent to the world-renowned Sigiriya Lion Rock. Historically, it served as a secluded monastery for Buddhist monks who moved there when King Kashyapa built his palace on Sigiriya. Today, it is a favorite destination for travelers seeking a more rugged and natural hiking experience.
The climb involves a moderate hike through the forest, passing by the Pidurangala Rajamaha Viharaya (cave temple) and a large, ancient reclining Buddha statue made of brick. The final section requires a bit of adventurous scrambling over boulders to reach the flat summit. Once at the top, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding jungle, lakes, and the most iconic, unobstructed view of Sigiriya Rock itself. It is widely considered the best spot in the region for watching the sunrise.

Absolutely worth the climb for sunrise! The view of Sigiriya is iconic. It's much cheaper than Sigiriya and less crowded. The scramble at the end is fun.

A great hike. Make sure to cover your shoulders and knees for the temple at the bottom. The monkeys are cute but keep your food hidden!

The view is breathtaking. It's a bit of a challenge to climb over the boulders at the very top, so wear good shoes. We went for sunset and it was magical.

Good alternative to the main rock if you are on a budget. You get to see the Lion Rock from a great angle. Entrance fee is reasonable.
