Overview - Seetha Amman Kovil

Seetha Amman Kovil is a unique temple located in the village of Seetha Eliya, just 5km from Nuwara Eliya. It is renowned as the only temple in the world dedicated specifically to Goddess Sita. According to the Ramayana, this location is the site of the Ashoka Vatika, where Sita was held captive by the demon king Ravana after her abduction. The temple is situated beside a stream where Sita is said to have bathed and prayed for her rescue.

One of the most fascinating features of the site is the presence of large footprints on the rocks by the riverbank, which are believed to be those of Lord Hanuman, who came to reassure Sita. The idols in the temple were excavated from the area centuries ago. The temple architecture features vibrant colors and statues typical of South Indian Kovils, set against the backdrop of mist-covered pine forests, making it a spiritually charged and scenic destination.

While the site holds significant cultural and mythological value due to its association with the Ramayana, it remains relatively underdeveloped and lesser known. With strategic investment and promotion, it has the potential to become a major tourist destination, particularly for those who revere or are familiar with the Ramayana.
