Overview - Unawatuna Devol Devalaya

Nestled along Devala Road in Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, Unawatuna Devol Devalaya (locally known as Welle Devalaya) is a tranquil Buddhist temple and Hindu shrine that invites visitors to immerse themselves in the region’s spiritual and architectural heritage. Dedicated to God Devol—a deity believed to protect fishermen and seafarers—this sacred site is celebrated for its traditional stone structures and serene ambiance. Perched on a rock outcrop by the sea, it offers a rare blend of historical significance and coastal tranquility.

The temple’s peaceful courtyards, adorned with ancient carvings and a central shrine, provide an ideal setting for reflection. Visitors often describe the site as a hidden gem, where the gentle rustle of palm trees, distant ocean waves, and the soft chime of prayer bells create a meditative atmosphere. It is particularly vibrant during the annual Esala Festival (July/August), featuring traditional drummers and dancers. Ideal for couples, families, and solo travelers seeking cultural immersion, the temple stands as a testament to Sri Lanka’s enduring devotion and is a perfect spot to witness a breathtaking sunset over the Indian Ocean.

I suggest going around sunset, because just behind the temple there's a beautiful sunset spot with rocks over the sea. Note: you have to enter with naked feet. No entrance fee.

It is believed to have been inhabited by the God Devol. Access is convenient up to Araliya Beach Resort, beyond which the road narrows. A short walk past the shrine brings visitors to a breathtaking view of the sea.
